Claw Foot Bath Tubs - The Evolution of Bathroom Design

Claw foot bath tubs were first brought into existence in the 1800's by a man who fashioned one from a watering trough and attached four pegs for legs. This tub idea was adapted and graduated into an iron tub with claw feet. In the days before every house had running water, it was necessary to fill the tub with buckets of water which cooled off rather quickly. Fortunately, this advanced to the tub with running water. After a period of time the use of claw foot bath tubs declined with the invention of the standard, inbuilt tub used in most homes today.

In modern times home decorators have tried many designs in homes to develop a 'different' look. Many have chosen the bathroom to add a vintage look. Today, one of the classic décor designs popular is the Victorian era claw foot bath tub. There are several different types of claw foot bath tubs. These include the Roman, slipper, double slipper, pedestal, classic, pedestal, contemporary (with wooden frame base), copper, wood, and freestanding claw foot tub. They come in iron, with enamel overlay, or lightweight acrylic. The slipper tub is raised on one end, allowing one the luxury of laying one's head in a comfortable position. The double slipper claw foot tub is raised at both ends for those who find romance in this room of the house as well as elsewhere. The Roman claw foot tub is rounded and raised at both ends, but not as high as the slipper or double slipper.

The iron bathtub with the enamel overlay is very durable, but requires adequate flooring as it is very heavy. The acrylic claw foot bathtub, on the other hand, is very light weight, is easy to move around, and will never rust. Unlike the iron tub the acrylic tub comes in many sizes so will often fit in a small area where the iron tub would be too big. Jetted water or jetted air whirlpool models are available in the acrylic tub and either tub can have an attached spray nozzle at the end of a hose. This spray is very convenient for rinsing the hair or the body after a bath.

These tubs are available in many colors today and some designers enhance the look of a white tub by purchasing one with gold feet and having gold on the other bathroom fixtures. A very attractive bathroom can be made by having the entire color scheme done in black and white. The white claw foot bathtub, white fixtures, black and white tile on the floor and walls with the wall tiles can be spaced in such a way to make an attractive design. This is very effective when trying to portray a certain period of design.

In reviewing claw foot bathtubs it is quite easy to find one to fit the one which will add beauty to the home and give the bathroom the elegant look desired.
